The Port Watch Project: Innovative Maritime Monitoring
Welcome to the Port Watch Project – an initiative combining advanced AI technology with ocean conservation efforts to create a more sustainable maritime future.
Our Mission
The Port Watch Project aims to develop an AI-enabled system for comprehensive underwater and surface monitoring. This technology has applications for various stakeholders, including port authorities, logistics companies, government agencies, and coastal communities.
The Challenge
Over the past 60 years, underwater radiated noise in our oceans has been doubling in intensity every decade. This increase, largely attributed to commercial shipping, poses significant risks to marine life, particularly endangered species. Effects on marine animals range from behavioral changes to habitat loss and increased stress levels.
With global trade expected to grow, addressing this issue has become crucial. In 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed on guidelines to reduce underwater noise, highlighting the global recognition of this problem.
Our Solution: Port Watch
Led by SeafarerAI, in collaboration with the University of New Brunswick, Teledyne, and the Port of Belledune, we’re developing Port Watch – an open technology architecture for real-time monitoring of underwater domains, waterways, and lands.
Key Features of Port Watch:
- Housed in a mobile 20ft shipping container
- Provides complete situational awareness of underwater and surface environments
- Utilizes AI for real-time monitoring and classification of underwater noise
- Establishes an ambient underwater radiated noise monitoring program
- Securely archives data to build a comprehensive “noise” library
Benefits for Stakeholders
- Port Authorities: Achieve Green Marine level 3 certification for underwater noise monitoring
- Shipping and Logistics Companies: Improve environmental performance and compliance
- Government Agencies: Access real-time data to inform policy decisions
- Indigenous Communities: Protect territorial waters and deter illegal fishing
- Marine Life: Benefit from reduced underwater noise pollution
